Accuracy and transparency in food and beverage labelling: reality check.
• Overview of hidden and grey areas: processing effects, artificial colours, flavours and sweeteners, contaminants and provenance
• More detailed insights into each, using examples, viz: processing effects on health (e.g. mechanically refined wholegrain cereals), natural flavours that are not naturally-derived, carriers for flavours that do not need to be disclosed, common contaminants that are known carcinogens (e.g. PAHs, heterocyclic amines, acrylamide), and multi-ingredient products in which ingredients are sourced in different countries from the country of manufacture.
• How socially and environmentally responsible companies in the food industry can take a lead, go beyond the minimum legal requirements, and set standards that less scrupulous actors are forced to follow.
